The Design Centre was established privately in 1976 as a structure to support and encourage makers by showing the high standards of design and craftsmanship becoming evident in Tasmania

Following our first major exhibition of Tasmanian furniture in the Sydney Opera House in 1981, the State developed a reputation for fine furniture design, culminating in major installations in the new Parliament House in Canberra. We are proud to show the work of those who were associated with this triumph.

We salute this progression by displaying in the Furniture Focus, Tasmanian contemporary furniture and furnishings which exemplify the State's professionalism.

We hope that you will have an opportunity to come and share our pleasure in this endeavour which now joins the exhibition and retail shops of the Centre.
