Entally House...
Entally House is located at Hadspen, about 18km from Launceston. The most
historic of the National Trust houses, it was thought to have been built in
1819 by Thomas Haydock Reibey, the eldest son of Mary and Thomas Reibey of
Sydney. Shipping interests brought Thomas Reibey to Tasmania as early as 1816.
Entally House (named after a suburb in Calcutta, India) was described in a
press article of 1883 as "more designed for comfort than as a model for the
exposition of any particular canons of architecture". Mr Reibey's library
was reported to be "perhaps the most extensive one in the colony".
Entally House was opened to the public in 1950 and is justly proud of its
magnificent collection of Regency furniture and fine silverware. Set in superb
grounds and gardens, Entally has a greenhouse, chapel, coach-house and stables
also open for inspection. It is open daily from 10:00am to 12:30pm, and from
1:00pm to 5:00pm (closed Christmas Day and Good Friday).
