Low Head...
A popular holiday resort 5km north of George Town, Low Head figures prominently
in marine activities. The present lighthouse (1888) gives magnificent views
of the Tamar River. The Pilot Station, established in 1805, is the oldest
operating in Australia and houses a Maritime Museum that is open 7 days a
week. A coastal walk leads to a small beach where penguins come ashore at
nightfall (you must be very quiet). The two main beaches are East Beach on
Bass Strait and the quieter and safe Lagoon Bay on the river. There are picnic
areas near both beaches with electric barbecues. Several launching ramps are
in the area, including a harbour built in the Cornish style at the Pilot Station.
