Waverley Woollen Mills...
Waverley Woollen Mills are open Monday to Friday from 9:00am to 5:00pm. Conducted
tours of the mill can be arranged showing the processing, from the scouring
of the raw greasy wool to finished blanket or throw rug. The tours begin and
end in our Mill Shop where purchases can be made.
Established in 1874, Waverley Woollen Mills is Australia's oldest woollen
mill and operates from its original site producing quality products from Australian
wool for local, national and international consumers.
Wool, nature's wonder fibre - and Waverley Woollen Mills uses only world famous
Tasmanian wool in its range of products. This wool is sought after by the
world's leading wool buyers at the local wool auctions. Because of the mild
climatic conditions there are fewer seeds and burrs in the fibre and carbonizing
(an acid bath to dissolve vegetable matter) is not essential. Down through
the years, the mill has clothed generations of Australians from pioneering
tweeds, serges and flannels and Boer War uniforms to today's classic blankets
and rugs.
See Waverley's historic hydro-electric generating plant, dating back to 1889.
This plant was installed at Waverley to generate power and lighting for the
mill and was installed a full six years before Launceston introduced power
to the city. Some people argue that it was the first hydro-electric power
plant in the Southern Hemisphere. It is a monument of 19th century engineering
ingenuity and is well worth a visit.
